As you already know, a research paper is not the simplest thing to do. It is possible to create a great one, but you will have to work for days to achieve this. After you have the topic and you finish the first draft, you have to focus on the other elements that you have to add. The table of content is one of them and as simple as it might seem, it can be a real problem if you don’t pay attention. Here is how to create a correct one that will impress your teacher:
- Establish how many chapters you want to have. This does not depend only on the volume of content that you have, but also on the type of text. For example, there are some topics where you need to write dozens of pages on the same idea. This means that you can not cut the idea in half just so you can add another chapter. It’s better to write them down from the beginning.
- Name each major chapter. Most of the time you will have several major chapters, and many small ones. The major ones are the most suggestive and this is what the reader will first look for. The name needs to be very explicit so they don’t have to guess what will you talk about in that part of your research paper. Make sure that the name is not confusing, that it’s not a complicated term or a word in another language. Keep it simple and short.
- Write a short idea for every important chapter. Then people will know that they have to read this, because it’s extremely relevant to the rest of the paper. Besides if the name of the chapter is not suggestive enough, this idea will sure be.
- Edit it on the computer and connect it to the paper itself. As you know, you have to write the page for every chapter. If you do not do this carefully the writer will not find the right information and he will be confused.
- Proofread it. Pretend like you are a professor and you read a random table of contents. Does it look good? Does it look professional? Can it be improved in any way? When you look from a different perspective you might find some mistakes that you did not notice in the beginning.
